Those suffering from Alzheimer's are still here

Marilyn Raichle wants to change the conversation about her mother and about Alzheimer’s.

The conversations often begin with ‘she’s gone’, or ‘she’s an empty shell now’, or ‘how sad’. It is sad of course. But here’s the point Raichle is eager to make: Her mother Jean is still here.

Dr Ken Harvey, an Adjunct Associate Professor in the school of public health at La Trobe University, has complained to the Therapeutic Goods Administration about Souvenaid, a new "medical food" which sells for about $4 a bottle.

He said the product, which is promoted by Nutricia Australia Pty Ltd as a "clinically proven" treatment of mild Alzheimer's disease, does not meet guidelines for such claims because the research behind it is "modest at best" and "of dubious clinical significance".

Alzheimer's and Bowel Movement
I really wanted to entitle this article Alzheimer's and the Magic Elixir. However, I am not using anything to mask the taste of my solution so it just didn't fit.

I also considered Alzheimer's and the Poop Panacea.Panacea does fit -- panacea is a literary term to represent any solution to solve all problems related to a particular issue.

Note:I wrote the first version of this article years ago. This article is being republished and re-opened for new comments and discussion.Like most Alzheimer's caregivers, I did give up more than once in my early years as a caregiver.

Memory Café Offers Companionship and Peace of Mind to the Community

Memory cafes unite members of a local Alzheimer's Community in a unique, important, and powerful way. Memory Cafes allow those living with dementia and their caregivers to live their lives in a real and meaningful way.

You will recognize both names because they are contributors to the Alzheimer's Reading Room -- Carole Larkin and Pat Sneller. The video and article featured below is a wonderful example of how a Memory Cafe can benefit persons living with dementia, their caregivers, and an entire Alzheimer's community.

Thanks to the combined efforts of Carole, Pat and many others the Alzheimer's Community north of Dallas, Texas (Richardson and the surrounding area) is coming together in a real and important way.

Memory Cafe's reach the people in the grass  in a way that cannot be accomplished by support groups, and they allow both the patient and the caregiver to get out of their home together and live life.
